Distribution Without a Budget
Your product doesn't exist if nobody knows about it. These channels are free and they work.
Find 3–5 subreddits where your exact customer hangs out. Search for posts asking for what you built — reply with your solution, naturally. Don't post ads. Post stories, behind-the-scenes, or ask for feedback. Subreddits to try: r/SideProject, r/Entrepreneur, r/indiehackers, r/startups, plus niche communities for your vertical.
Show HN posts get real traffic. Title format: "Show HN: [Name] — [one-sentence description]". Post on a weekday between 8–10am Eastern. Include your honest backstory in the first comment. Respond to every comment within the first 2 hours — this boosts visibility.
Launch day matters. Build a hunter network first (find active PH users on Twitter). Schedule your launch for Tuesday–Thursday, midnight PST. Write a genuine maker post. Ask friends to vote at launch — not in the comments. Your first 50 upvotes determine if you make the front page.
Your first 10 customers will come from people you already know. Write a personal email (not a newsletter blast) to 20 people explaining what you built and why. Ask one specific thing: "Would you try it and tell me what's broken?" This is not shameful — it's how every company starts.
Find contacts via LinkedIn or Apollo.io (free tier). Keep it to 5 sentences: who you are, what you built, why you emailed them specifically, one ask. Do NOT use mail merge blast templates — people can tell. Personalize each email with one sentence about their specific situation.
